Corporate Team Building: Your Questions Answered
Planning a team building event sounds simple until you start asking the important questions. What will actually work for our people? How many people can you accommodate? What will it cost? Can you customise it? Will it work alongside our conference? And, most importantly, will anyone remember it six months later?
Here are the answers.
Understanding Team Building Choosing the Right Team Building Practical Questions About Dream Team Catalyst
Corporate team building is about helping people work better together. The right experience gives teams an opportunity to communicate, solve problems, make decisions, collaborate and sometimes compete in ways that aren’t possible in the normal workplace. It should be more than an afternoon of entertainment. At Dream Team Catalyst, we use experiential learning to turn carefully designed challenges into practical lessons about teamwork, leadership, communication and performance.
The activity gets people involved. The experience gives them something to take back to work.
Because even very talented people don’t automatically make a great team. Teams need to communicate, trust one another, make decisions, handle pressure, solve problems and deal with differences. A well-designed team building experience gives people the opportunity to practise those behaviours in a completely different environment. It can also simply give people the chance to reconnect, have fun and see their colleagues in a different light.
The important thing is to start with what you want to achieve, rather than choosing an activity simply because it looks entertaining.
They’re related, but they’re not quite the same thing. Team bonding is primarily about relationships. It’s about giving people an opportunity to connect, have fun and create shared experiences. Team building goes further by deliberately developing behaviours that help a team perform better, such as communication, collaboration, trust, decision-making and problem-solving. Sometimes your team needs one. Sometimes it needs the other. Sometimes it needs both.
Team building focuses primarily on how a particular group works together. Organisational development is broader. It can involve leadership, culture, structures, systems, strategy and the way the organisation as a whole operates. The two can work extremely well together. A team building experience can reveal issues that require deeper organisational development work, while OD objectives can also be brought to life through experiential team programmes.
Quite simply, learning by doing. Instead of telling people how they should communicate, collaborate or solve problems, experiential learning puts them into situations where those behaviours matter. Participants experience what happens, reflect on it with a facilitator and then connect the learning back to the workplace. The result tends to stick because people didn’t just hear about it. They experienced it.
Experiential learning is at the heart of what we do.
Yes, but a fun activity isn’t a magic wand. If a team has serious conflict, poor relationships or low morale, simply taking everyone out for the afternoon may provide a temporary lift without addressing the real problem. In those circumstances, we can design a more purposeful intervention involving facilitated discussion, structured activities and reflection. The objective is to understand what’s getting in the way of the team and create an experience that helps move things forward.
Quite a lot! Our programmes include business simulations, problem-solving challenges, creative experiences, construction and invention, music and rhythm, physical challenges, escape-style experiences, networking activities, giving-back programmes, AI-powered experiences and plenty more. The better question isn’t “Which activity do you have?” It’s “What are we trying to achieve?” From there, we’ll recommend the experience that fits your people, objectives, group size, time and budget.
Dream Team Catalyst has access to more than 200 programmes and we are adding to our portfolio all the time. Our global R&D team produce a minimum of 20 original activities each year.
Yes. In fact, that’s often where the most interesting work starts. We can tailor the programme to your industry, company culture, strategic objectives, conference theme, current challenges or specific learning outcomes. That might mean branding an existing experience, changing the challenges, incorporating your company strategy or creating something entirely new.
We don’t believe your team should have to fit the activity. The activity should fit your team.
Absolutely. In fact it’s our most frequently received request and we’ve become very good at it. Team building works particularly well when it is connected to the wider event rather than bolted onto the end of it. We can build your company values, strategic priorities, conference theme, brand or key messages into the experience itself.
That turns team building from a break in the programme into part of the programme.
Yes. Executive teams often need something quite different from a large corporate group. The emphasis might be on strategic thinking, leadership, decision-making, collaboration, trust, communication or simply getting a leadership team out of its usual environment. We can design the experience accordingly, from a focused executive intervention to a more relaxed shared experience.
No problem. Team building doesn’t have to involve running around, climbing things or getting muddy. There has been a marked shift in the types of activities that we offer today compared to “the early days”. Physical and competitive were much more popular “back in the day” whereas creative and collaborative are much more in demand nowadays. We offer creative, strategic, technology-based, musical, problem-solving, business simulation, networking and many other experiences. Our activity finder covers everything from “Just for Fun” and networking to leadership, innovation, conflict management and strategic thinking.
Yes. Indoor programmes can be particularly effective when you need predictable logistics, weather independence or a more focused environment. We can also combine indoor and outdoor elements where appropriate.
Yes. AI is increasingly becoming part of the way organisations work, so we’ve developed experiences that allow teams to explore AI through creativity, problem-solving, storytelling, innovation and strategy. No technical expertise is required. The objective isn’t to give people another presentation about AI. It’s to let them experience what AI can actually do. We have pioneered an approach called “Generative Collaborative Intelligence”, whereby teams learn to work with LLMs and AI systems, with the AI acting as a team member.
Our AI programmes can also be customised around your organisation’s objectives, culture and level of AI adoption.
Yes. Our giving-back programmes combine a genuine team experience with a practical contribution to a community or cause. Teams might build bicycles, create resources, assemble furniture, support community projects or take part in other purpose-driven challenges. For example, our Building A Dream programme has teams solving challenges and managing resources to build bicycles that are subsequently donated to children in need.
That means the team isn’t simply talking about purpose. They’re doing something.
From small executive teams to large corporate events involving hundreds or thousands of delegates. The programme, facilitation structure and logistics are designed around the size and nature of your group rather than simply scaling up a small activity. Large groups require different thinking. We’ve been doing it for more than three decades.
That depends on what you’re trying to achieve. We can create anything from a short energiser or one-hour experience to a half-day, full-day or multi-day programme.
Two to three hours is a popular format for corporate groups because it provides enough time to create a meaningful experience without taking an entire working day.
There isn’t a single price. Cost depends on the number of participants, programme, duration, location, venue requirements, equipment, facilitation and degree of customisation.
A 20-person executive experience and a 1,000-person corporate event are very different propositions. Rather than forcing every client into a fixed package, we look at your objectives, group and budget and recommend an experience that makes sense.
Tell us what you’re working with and we’ll work from there.
We can recommend suitable venues, depending on the programme and location. If you book our services we’ll source and manage the venue should you wish. We generally do not charge for this service and we can often get better rates than are publicly available. We also regularly deliver team building as part of conferences, strategy sessions, off-sites and residential events. If you already have a venue, that’s fine too. We’ll work with the space and its practical requirements.
Yes. Our Head Office is in Midrand, Johannesburg and we have an office in Cape Town, but we operate throughout South Africa and the broader Southern African region. We regularly work with clients in all major centres including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and elsewhere, and can also deliver programmes for international corporate retreats and conferences, including destinations such as Mauritius, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and the Seychelles.
Absolutely. In fact, conferences are one of the best opportunities to use experiential activities. We can create energisers, networking experiences, competitive team challenges or a full team building programme that connects directly to the conference theme and business objectives.
The more we know, the better we can design the experience.
Ideally, tell us:
Then we’ll take it from there. Where possible we’ll make ourselves available to meet with you online or in person to discuss your requirements and offer obligation-free consultations, concept development and quotations.
Since 1992. That’s more than three decades of designing and delivering corporate experiences for South African and international organisations. We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go in that time. The fundamental challenge, getting people to work better together, hasn’t changed.
Pretty much any industry where people need to work with other people. We’ve worked with organisations across financial services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, retail, energy, professional services, hospitality, travel and many other sectors. The advantage of working across industries is that we can bring ideas and approaches from one environment into another.
Our programmes are facilitated by experienced professionals trained in experiential learning, group dynamics and organisational development. We employ the best and never stop developing them. And we place a high value on experience. Over two-thirds of our facilitators have been working with us for 20 years or more.
Catalyst Global is an international network of experiential learning and team building companies. Operating in over 90 countries, the network gives Dream Team Catalyst access to a broad portfolio of world class programmes and international expertise while allowing us to deliver those experiences with local knowledge and facilitation.
Dream Team Catalyst is the licensed Catalyst Global partner for Southern Africa.
We’ve been doing this since 1992. But longevity on its own isn’t enough. What matters is what we’ve learned along the way. We combine experience, creativity, organisational development and experiential learning to design programmes around what our clients actually need. We design, adapt and customise all our programmes ourselves. We never copy, and you can be sure we understand what we are doing and the underlying process.
We have won countless awards and accolades for our events and bring enthusiasm and dedication to every event. We know that while a particular event might be our 90th of the month it could very well be your annual event. In that case you would be right not to care about the other 89. We’re not interested in simply giving you an activity and a bus ticket. We want to understand why you’re bringing your people together, what you want them to experience and what you want them to take back to work.
And, yes, we want them to have a fantastic time while they’re doing it!
Still have a question? Tell us what you’re trying to achieve, how many people are involved, where and when you’re doing it, and we’ll help you work out what makes sense.
No obligation. No generic package. Just a conversation about what your team needs.
